Junkyard Treasure: 2006 MINI Cooper S - Autoweek

It's strange to think that the BMW-built "new Mini" has been with us for nearly 20 years in North America; the first ones came here for the 2002 model year (four years after the VW New Beetle and one year after the Chrysler PT Cruiser, but beating the Chevy HHR and Fiat 500 to market in the early-20th-century retro-styling race). I've been seeing plenty of New Minis at the big U-Wrench yards while on junkyard patrol for at least a decade, but the appearance of non-smashed Cooper Ss in these car graveyards is a relatively new phenomenon. Here's an '06 that I spotted in a Denver yard just last week.

The supercharged-and-intercooled 1.6-liter four-cylinder in this car made 168 horsepower for 2006, which made for a very fun 2,679-pound car. No junkyard shopper has yet plucked the blower and related hardware out of this car. I'll need to research the difficulty level for junkyard blower removal on the Cooper S, because now there are four easy-to-find superchargers available in your local junkyard (five, if you count the increasingly-common-in-junkyards Kompressors on Mercedes-Benz W202 and W203 C-Classes).

For some reason, an automatic transmission was available in the Cooper S, but this car came with the fun-enhancing 6-speed manual.

If you're going to drive a fast British car (or a slow one that looks fast), you might as well get one in the proper British Racing Green color.
